DENTURE
What is denture?
Denture is replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues that can be removed and put back into your mouth as you please. There are two types of dentures available, including partial and full dentures. A partial denture is used to replace a number of teeth, while full denture is used to replace all of the natural teeth.
What is denture made of?
Different types of partial denture material that available are:
- Metal partial denture – usually from alloy of cobalt and chrome. Although the base is metal, it has gum colored acrylic and natural looking acrylic teeth attached to it. This type of denture is stronger than other type.
- Acrylic partial denture – usually is made of methyl methacrylate. This type is considered to be less desirable than cast one (in terms of strength and durability). They do, however offer the advantage that teeth can usually be added to the appliance if the patient loose additional natural teeth.
- Flexible partial denture – the flexible nature can make wearing this type of appliance less irritating to teeth and soft tissues because the denture can adapt to the constant movement and flexibility in your mouth.
Is it uncomfortable to have a denture made?
A denture is a foreign object and unfortunately it cannot duplicate the exact feel and function of your natural teeth. Your denture may take some time to get used to it. Some people say that it feels bulky that they don’t have enough room for their tongue.
These feelings will affect the way you eat and talk for a little while. You may also experience slurred speech, gagging, excessive salivation and funny or diminished taste.
Again, these issues usually disappear over time.
