DENTAL IMPLANTS
What is dental implant?
Dental implant is an ideal solution to replace missing or extracted teeth instead of having bridges or dentures. A dental implant most often takes the form of a small screw-shaped titanium post placed in the jaw bone to support a replacement tooth.
This acts like the root of a natural tooth. Once in place and bone surrounding the implant has had time to heal, a lifelike crown custom-made is attached to the post.
How does the implant work?
The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months. First, the implant is placed in the jaw bone. The surgical procedure used to place an implant is actually quite minor and routine, requiring only local anesthesia in most cases.
After the implants are placed the gums are sutured. It will then be left to heal for period of months to allow the bone to form a strong bond to the implant.
Once the implant has integrated with the bone, it’s time to place an abutment on the implant. The abutment serves as the base for your new tooth. After the abutment is placed, an impression is taken and is used to create the permanent restoration.
The permanent restoration (crown) is custom made to ensure the ideal color, shape and size. Once the restoration is completed you can return to the office to attach the restoration permanently.
What are the benefits of dental implant?
Implants are typically more expensive than other methods of tooth replacement, however, they provide superior benefits.
- Restore the mouth as closely as possible to its natural state
- Preserve the natural tooth tissue by avoiding the need to cut adjacent teeth as with conventional bridge.
- preserve bone and significantly reduce bone resorption and deterioration that results in loss of jawbone height
- increase comfort by eliminating loose fitting denture generally last 10-20 years.
